I am a specialist Music teacher with over 20 years experience in the UK and South Africa. I teach privately to beginners (both children and adults) and advanced students, as well as delivering Curriculum Music to children of all ages and abilities. I have always loved singing in choirs and have been the founder choral conductor of Dunnington Community choir (York) since its inception in 2001. I believe in the value of a focussed and fun education through Music and the Arts I grew up in South Africa so Music was very much a part of my life; from regular choral singing to the rhythmic African beats in all that I heard. I was fortunate to have a private education where I received awards for performance and Musicianship as well as the opportunity to play as principal flautist in the Provincial Wind orchestra. I completed a BA in Music and English at Rhodes University in Grahamstown, South Africa. At university I received a bursary for merit in Music Education as well as awards for Best woodwind student. I sang as a regular member and soloist with the Rhodes University Chamber choir under the baton of Christopher Cockburn. We toured extensively in Southern Africa. I graduated from the university of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban with a Higher Diploma in Education and teaching method in Music, English and Drama. I worked as a company actress with the Natal Performing Arts Council in Theatre in Education projects before taking over the role of Music teacher at King's school, Nottingham Road, South Africa, where I lived and taught for 3 years. Here I thrived in a free and creative community where children from all over South Africa were encouraged to blossom as they explored the world around them and discovered their talents. I trained the choir, organised termly concerts, ran trips to cultural events and co-directed the annual Shakespeare / musical productions. In 1996 I came to England. I worked in a variety of schools in the greater London area, teaching Music wherever I could. I secured a permanent position at St. Paul's C.E. Primary in Walworth where I taught Music across the school from Nursery to Year 6. There I trained a number of choirs, instrumental groups, directed school plays, concerts and church services. Having moved to Yorkshire in 2001 and beginning my journey as a mother, I have, over the past 15 years, enjoyed a range of roles in Music and Education. Choral singing has been with me throughout and I have always enjoyed leading choirs of all ages and abilities. I have taught instrumental groups in schools too as well as being very involved with the direction of school plays and drama projects. From my earliest days back at university, I have always tutored musicians privately. I have loved learning so much myself along the way and am always looking for new ways to expand my own abilities and musical prowess. I have successfully entered many students through ABRSM exams over the years and continue to lead my choirs to new and challenging repertoire and performances. My musical credentials include: ABRSM: Advanced certificate in Flute performance : Grade 8 Flute :Grade 7 Piano :Intermediate Piano Ensemble UNISA: Grade 8 Recorder (Treble) :Grade 6 Singing
