I’m an oboe specialist, classically trained and teach beginners upwards in oboe, flute, clarinet, alto saxophone and recorder. I teach individually and in groups, both privately and in various schools in York. I combine structured aims with a sense of fun, allowing students to improve, experiment and enjoy playing music, performing in front of their peers, the school and parents on occasion.

I follow the exam syllabus for both ABRSM and Trinity, alternatively students of all ages can learn just for fun. I have a BA Honours Degree in English Literature (2:1) from Lancaster University; I have ABRSM practical oboe grades 3-6 and 8 (distinction), ABRSM Grade 5 Theory and GCSE Music. I started learning oboe in 1986, playing in various youth orchestras and wind bands along the way! After a break from playing (and four children later), I have played in York Light Orchestra for the last 10 years and more recently for Thirsk Sinfonia. I also play at weddings, in various ensembles and in musical productions for theatre groups.

I care passionately about making music accessible for all and hope that my enthusiasm and encouraging approach will enable all my students to progress in playing their chosen instrument, in turn helping them grow in confidence in other areas of their lives.
